Last week Abel + Imray hosted a Summer of IP event at our London office.
Abel + Imray was delighted to welcome twenty four impressive potential new entrants to the IP profession to our taster day last week, held as part of the IPInclusive Summer of IP campaign.
The day started with a Meet and Greet with Managing Partner Rhys Williams and followed with a session by Emily Dodgson and Julia Coggins on an ‘Intro to Patents and what we are looking for in Patent Trainees’.
Following that Caroline Brooks led a session on an ‘Intro to Trade Marks and what we are looking for in Trade Mark Trainees’.
During lunch, attendees got to speak with each other and ask questions to A+I support staff and attorneys.
In the afternoon attendees got to ask current trainees Marcell Komlosi, Becca Allen, Amelia Thompson, and Anne Wagner questions about their experience thus far.
Rhys Williams then held an interactive session on drafting, followed by a workshop with Emily Dodgson on ‘Interview, CV, and application form technique’.
We held a Q+A session to round up the day and put on a drinks reception for the attendees to ask any further questions to A+I staff and other participants.
All of us at A+I are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace for everyone who works here. It was a real pleasure to run this event to encourage a broader range of people to pursue a career in IP.
Feedback from attendees on the day was positive and we felt like it was a rewarding event for all involved.
"...a really enjoyable and well organised event which offered something very different to other IP firm open days I have attended, in that Abel + Imray ran a CV and cover letter workshop which has been exactly what I have been looking for."
"I was surprised that you said this was the first event that you've done like this, because it looks as if you have been running these sorts of events frequently."
"Anne Wagner was absolutely wonderful, articulate and a joy. Her honesty pertaining topics such as diversity has eased the minds of several minority applicants I spoke with on the day. Rhys created a very thought-provoking session, particularly surrounding subjective descriptive words e.g., lightweight/aerodynamic. All the trainees were personable, and the partners gave further great insight into what is wanted."
"I found everyone really welcoming, and I thought you were open and honest about really tough questions."
If you're interested in a career in IP, then keep an eye out on our website and LinkedIn for any future events we may hold. Trainee vacancies for Autumn 2024 will be advertised on our website in autumn/winter 2023.
If you missed this event, then please take a look at the Summer of IP website which lists events being held by other firms as part of the Summer of IP campaign. The IPInclusive Summer of IP campaign will continue to run throughout summer 2023 and aims to raise awareness of IP-related careers, encourage a wider range of people to pursue them, and improve access to them by providing “taster” activities and guidance.
