Ph.D. Physical Chemistry, University of Bristol

Scientific Background
Simon conducted PhD research on the experimental characterization of discotic liquid crystals using various scattering techniques such as x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity, EXAFS, and neutron scattering. The study aimed to establish a correlation between molecular structure, packing structure, and molecular dynamics. During his post-doctoral work at DERA Malvern, he focused on comprehending the behaviour of surface-stabilised ferroelectric liquid crystal displays. Simon has co-authored papers in journals such as Liquid Crystals, Journal of Material Chemistry, Journal of Applied Crystallography, Applied Physics Letters, Molecular Physics, Ferroelectrics, Molecular Crystals Liquid Crystals, and The Journal of the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers.

Experience
Simon handles patent and registered design work for a diverse mix of clients, ranging from global industry leaders to universities and SMEs. Drawing on a scientific background that includes chemistry, physics, and materials science, he works frequently with inventors and R&D teams to fully understand the technical details of inventions and seeks to build strong relationships with clients while understanding their commercial goals, developing IP strategies that provide broad protection for key inventions, and ensuring that they gain the maximum benefit from their IP.

Simon also has experience in IP assignments.

Key subject areas for Simon include:

  • Defence and security
  • Aerospace
